100-U.S. Legatim, Seoul, Korea

The U.S. sent its first delegation to Korea in May, 1883 as a result a trade and friendship treaty signed in May, 1882. Lucius H. Foote, accompanied by his wife, Rose, was the first Minister to Korea. They had a close relationship with the Korean Royal Family and hosted the officers of the Juniata on numerous occasions as recounted in the journal of Dr. Woods. The Footes are pictured here, near the center of the photo. The photo was taken within the walls of Chong Dong, Seoul, residence of the Korean Royal Family. The compound is described in detail by Dr. Woods. The same building is pictured on the right in figure 9, Naval Surgeon in Yi Korea, and identified as the household of the American Legation in Chongdong. (Reprinted from Mary V. Tingely Lawrence, A Diplomat's Helpmate (San Francisco, 1918).
