124-USS Trenton

124-USS Trenton

The USS Trenton has been called “the most formidable cruising ship of our neglected navy… the only one that approached the practice of other nations at the time”. While on the Asiatic Station, Trenton occasionally sent landing parties ashore in China and Korea to protect American nationals during times of unrest. In March 1889 she was lost in a Samoan hurricane while serving as flagship of the Pacific Squadron. There is a beautiful stained glass window at the Naval Academy in memory of the victims.
