"Geisha", meaning "art person", acted as hostesses and entertainers. Teahouses were licensed by the government and laws controlled what services Geisha could offer and how they dressed. During the 1880’s Geisha represented the highest form of fashion, beauty, and music. They were professional entertainers and hostesses performing traditional Japanese arts at teahouses and banquets.
